If we had hard tough luck challenges, we'd be happily moving mountains to overcome them. Unfortunately we're placated babies sucking on pacifiers trying to make issues out of anything so that we can stay entertained.
Meanwhile, serious countries have had us in their sights for 20 or 30 years and a major conflict to take the USA out is coming. It may be war, but hopefully it is just economic war.
Well on behalf of the chemists and materials scientists of the world I apologize! It was certainly not the chemists who had to be "ordered...to halt discharges of all fluorinated compounds into the river." But as a chemist my hunch is that simple non-structured per fluorinated small molecules are probably as biologically inert as silicones in vanishingly small doses. They just are even less degradable. And certainly the ick factor of fluorine vs carbon stabilized strings of molecular sand. (yes i like hearing myself write). I am blanket skeptical of most studies showing toxicity of compounds designed to be inert. It's usually the parts per mass animal vs parts per mass water that animal ingests bait and switch. Water is toxic in unrealistically high doses. https://chatgpt.com/share/67f85773-0ba8-8004-ab27-3b051513f4... (never embarrassed if my strong opinion is shown to be wrong by the way).
I will check out the book. I will say we love irony... and we had a lot of fun... so who cares ;). We're not going to be as successful as our parents. Wanh. Eff it all and pass the joint. But yes perhaps if less commodified, we would have given more thought the spirit instead of buying in hook line and sinker, and the next gen wouldn't be stuck with "Paul American." On the other hand we did escape barely from the coming Facebook/Insta techno-soulp0calypse. So we're here now to pull up our saggy "genes" (unintentional typo but stuck with it... to much pot) and fight!
I 'vouched' for your comment because the actual content doesn't seem out of place to me. My guess is that users flagged it solely because it was all lowercase, and informal (the last part, that is).
HN has Reddit-anxiety: people here want to avoid comments that are too casual, jokey, meme-y, 'meta', etc. Anyhow, welcome!
I think one of the most harmful books to 21st century people is Frankl's book Man's Search for Meaning. I thought it was a good book when I read it but I've met so many people who've woven it into their stories of anti-resilience. Like your high school is like a concentration camp. Or making you wear a mask in public is like the holocaust. Or trans people are like Jews in Nazi Germany.
I'm glad I am easily entertained and can find meaning in writing code or taking photographs or going for walks or watching anime or playing video games or lifting weights and many other things. I don't have to join the Yudkowsky cult and write articles about how much despair I have about an imaginary problem while ignoring all the real horsemen of the apocalypse and profess being an atheist while really being half Cthulhu cultist and half follower of Teilhard de Chardin.

Hey there is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GenX but really this book https://thebaffler.com/books/commodify-your-dissent-the-busi... makes me glad that the culture machine didn't cover the music of my youth.
